  • Depends on use case. The way I see it is that if its sensitive or requires specific software I want something stable. When first started woth linux I used Ubuntu things never really broke until the next LTS patch then I started getting programs that wouldn’t update to the newest version, or the version I needed was only in the last LTS.

With gaming nothing of value ever lives on a gaming rig, I expect for it to get messy (with app comp data, cache, proton varaints, numerous windows directories etc) to the point reinstalling feels easier, and I only ever need to download games from gog/steam. But with rolling release I actually see frequent updates for nvidia GPUs and I think they are making actual improvements more and more. I’ve never had an update break stuff on me like it has with Ubuntu has, but I haven’t used a rolling release long enough or in the same way to get the feeling for what people mean by rolling releases are more likely to break your system.

  • I don’t know how impactful those are, and I think a person with access to a decent metal shop could pose more danger.

What is it just the access that’s scary then? As a guy that doesn’t know guns, you often hear things like a potato or a water bottle can be made into a makeshift surpressor or turning a single fire into a sensative rapid fire trigger is trival. So I’m just not understanding why 3d printers are almost entirely linked to making guns in everyone’s minds. When I first got a elgoo that was the first thing people would jokingly ask if I was going to make one.

Like maybe I can understand the argument that access is so low anyone can do it, but even then you can’t just download a gun. The person who is doing this already bought gun parts and knows how to assemble them. This is not going to stop that kind of person from building a gun in any form. The gun is still the metal parts you buy online. A silencer, a trigger mod, whatever is useless until you handle ghost guns.

  • I’m not a gun guy but from my understanding of ghost guns you pretty much buy the whole gun online in parts, and you just 3d print a handle.

So I don’t understand why people are so afraid of 3d printing when it really has minimal to do with the final product. From what I can tell you can’t just 3d print a gun from start to finish like its a llm. You still have to buy the actual gun parts from the manufacturer. To me this sounds completely unrelated and like a issue with regulating gun parts.

You can carve a handle out of soap, wood, or buy a solid chunk of plastic and its the same result.

  • Debian based systems for systems you need more stable. Generally not a big concern for me unless you are setting up servers or really depend on specific software.

I wouldn’t recommended Ubuntu, I would recommend something like mint if you’re going that route. But Ubuntu is a safe feeling first choice and i get why people chose it. If you google a problem and just add the word Ubuntu generally speaking the google result or even googles ai summary has got you covered pretty good.

If you are more into gaming I would suggest something like bazzite, cachyos. Often they handle drivers for you super easily and comes with things like game scope too. Often you want more bleeding edge operating systems for gaming/newer hardware as updates seem to happen more frequently and with more noticeable improvements in the past 5 years.

If you just need a basic computer the choice doesn’t really matter all that much its just kind of what looks good to you. You said its just for older computers so something like mint would be a fine choice in this scenario.

Generally speaking you are either picking a arch based system or a Debian based system. And all the distros are kind of the same, they just give you preinstalled software, technically you can pick any and get the features you wanted yourself.

Hopefully I didn’t confuse you more or give you too much decision paralysis.

  • Amazon and adafruit lists it for around 120-150 USD now so yes. 200 for one with a case and charger, etc.

I don’t know what those services are they look sketch to me so that screen shot means nothing to me. Even if they are legit I doubt they will ship to me. Or if they do ship it me its going to cost 80 dollars and take 3 months.

Theres generally a reason why it’s so cheap.

  • If you already make a recycling run to the scrap yard its worth doing. I got 120 bucks last run just off old PCs and it wasn’t even that much, you just get more when you separate it. Aluminium cases, ram, motherboard, hard drives, CPUs. The older they are often the more they are worth, and if you are into eBay selling im sure you could make a killing. I heard even DDR 3 is coming back so who knows anymore.

Only thing you shouldn’t take is TVs you have to pay to get rid of them. Maybe don’t take appliance too. some people do, for example fridges have a few valuable components but I would not reccomend it. You end up with plastics and other junk sometimes and have to pay to get a dump run.

A lot of it only makes sense if you can store a pile until it gets big enough to be worth a trip out.

  • I have two spare 8th gen Intel PCs I saved from the garbage bin, and a old gaming desktop that I now use as the server. So if I need a spare server I’m probably going to use one of those. I can get USB to gpio so been thinking of trying trying that route more considering how often people get rid of old pcs. I have a stack of windows vista-7 era laptops I was going to take apart for scrap too which could be used.

I bought the pis a long time ago, each time a found a project for one I was sad I didn’t have one to play with and kept buying more. They aren’t really even in use now. Ones built in to my work station and occasionally I boot into it and use raspberry pi imager to flash ubuntu or something on a USB. Its useful to have just ready on occasion. I have a hard time getting rid of them because of use cases like that, and in have a lot of hats/accessories for them like the ai camera. Even though I’m not really going to use them like I used to anymore.

  • Madthumbs I’m pretty sure just uses ai to summarize things for him. He slips a lot, he had me going for a while but he straight up lied about having used proton to some user, the user told him madthumbs his experience with proton which is what more accurate to what I remembered when steam deck was released. madthumbs then said something like “huh I remember the experience being subjective, but my ai agreed with what you said!” And then just fucked off completely disregarding what he said before.

He heavily uses ai for his posts too. I mean maybe he is legit and knows what hes talking about but every once and a while it feels like he slips up and I’m unsure. Because a lot of what he says is just basic arguments gemeni will bring up if you ask it “how do I shit on Linux fans” and a lot of stuff he mentions is out dated too. I don’t know.

Sometimes its also just fun to pretend hes Tim Sweeny getting angry drunk alone in his compound in the shittiest part of the prison belt in the united States. And this is what he does in his free time when not furiously masterbaiting to the thought of gabens penis.

  • I was surprised to know he existed here too not just on reddit.

He comes off as one of those guys who are against “male genital mutilation”

Like sure man some times you bring up a solid point, but you’re also being a weirdo by making it your life mission. Also no one asked to you put fake blood on your crotch and march around in public to be made fun of, but there you are doing it. You brought it up a notch for no real reason. Yet no ones reading them, no one cares yet he marches down the street proud in his weird world.

What I don’t understand is when you get to the point of making your own subreddit where you only talk to yourself, how do you stay motivated? Like I cant imagine what their goals are, or what they think is going to happen. The only coclusion I can come to is linus fucked his mom when he was a kid, and walked in on it.
