What at first glance looks almost like an amorphous mush is the north German dish called Labskaus. But what do sailors have to do with this dish?

    I once went to Rügen for vacation and had the best Labskaus ever. Even years later my spouse still talks about it.

    Been there. Tried it. Hm. Yes, OK. But kinda underwhelming. Still a poor man’s food IMHO.

    am I missing something, or is it just corned beef hash, a perfectly ordinary dish (that often comes with pickled herring on the side, which some people might find objectionable, but is not actually an essential part of the Labskaus itself)

      No, it’s quite different. We have a dish that is a little bit like haggis in Germany as well: Pinkel is a savoury sausage with cereal. It’s eaten in the winter, together with cooked kale, mainly in and around Bremen.

      According to Wikipedia, Labskaus is known as (Lob)scouse in the Liverpool area, but the picture in the Scouse article looks like a completely different dish, than what you’d find in Germany.
