When you spur of the moment decide to turn your gaming pc into a proxmox machine and then miss gaming so you end up down a rabbit hole of iommu groups to pass your Gpu through to a steam os VM to wrestle with Linux virtual display drivers so you can use sunshine to cast your games to your laptop
It eventually worked but you can quickly end up in a niche hell hole with little to no coherent documentation.

I converted my gaming machine into a server a while back. I like to live dangerously though, no proxmox. Baremetal. If my blog is slow, sorry y’all, I’m gaming. Deal with it.

No lie, they’re awesome. I’ve got two R720s, and they really aren’t bad. I leave one off. The other runs 4-5 VMs and doesn’t spin loud at all. Lack rack, surplus drives, a refurbed UPS and it just goes.
Had an R710 in my bedroom for a few years, do not recommend

I’m careful about what I want to host because I know I’m the asshole that needs to fix it when it breaks, and password managers that my wife uses are 100% off the self-hosted menu.
Vaultwarden requires Bitwarden to keep on allowing client access. Even if there are FOSS plugins/clients, I still need ot host it between my house and a cloud and it needs to be highly available.
I’ll keep paying for that one.

I’ve barely got them convinced to use a low friction password manager. Even the loss of autocomplete on phone would be enough they’d start using browser based secrets.

Stage 6 federated clusters on your buddies infrastructure so each of you have off site high availability. Or hardware squirled away at families houses.
Stage 7 OpenStack running on all those clusters, giving a seamless single-cloud experience.
Honestly I prefer the kubevirt, kubeOVN route (ala Harvester).
OpenStack is a decades long labor of love that feels like it was started decades ago, you know?

Just wait till stage 4 - I’ve got a 12u server rack, separate 6u networking cabinet, 80+ containers running on multiple VMs managed by multiple Proxmox nodes and all my infrastructure is transitioning to OpenTofu and OpenBao so I can spin up new VMs, manage the containers with Komodo, etc and all managed with single sign on. I’ve got ~$12k sunk into my local AI server alone. I have like 2 active users besides myself…
I won’t lie. I’ve found myself peaking into corners of the house and thinking about where I’d install a proper rack. House just isn’t wired properly for it, though.
I had two separate 20 amp circuits ran into a closet and threw an exhaust fan to outside so I save on cooling costs. Where there’s a will there’s a way!

It’s a meme so… Sure? I’d say the jump is from commodity hardware and manual maintenance to enterprise hardware, infrastructure as code, and high availability. It’s a whole new level of pain in my opinion both in terms of mental fatigue and on my wallet

I had my own Nextcloud and Home Assistant (on a raspberry pi) for years and they’re awesome, but I really don’t have a use case for specialized stuff like jellyfin or vaultwarden. I just slap my media and a keepass file on my Nextcloud and I’m happy!

Idk about vaultwarden, but Jellyfin is just a media server. Sonarr/Prowler lets me queue up the shows I want to watch. Jellyfin plays them on the two big TVs and the kid’s pad I have in the house. It’s pretty straightfoward. Less tedious than fishing for torrents on the traditional basket of sites and manually queuing up the downloads. And I can watch the shows anywhere, rather than being anchored to a single machine.
But you still need video files on your server and manually source them form somewhere, right?
Right. It’s still a home server setup. Unless, I guess, you’ve got some kind of cloud service you can pipe the data in from. But then you’re regressing to #1.
Stage 3
I left all of that shit behind and now just use VLC to stream to any pc on my network from a shared drive.
i uhh yeah host abt 10 containers on an i7 laptop currently. in my small office (kids bedroom) closet. I do also have a 3tb storage available but its what I had … an external wd drive. sigh. i am nbr 3 huh?
Um… Where does the guy in the middle host his shit these days? Asking for a friend.
Aim for step 2.5 and be the middle guy but hosting it all on a retired PC in the closet. It’s almost like step 3.
Alternatively, I guess you could use a VPS but those can get expensive quick.
