    It’s a shame liberals can’t become populists. Likely has something to do with most people realizing that the financialization goals liberals have of the economy don’t actually benefit them and largely hurt them. So now countries are vascilating wildly between two different ideologies that can’t actually produce what they say they can. But one of them very much is happy to destroy the systems that allow the vascilation.

    Maybe if liberals fixing involved breaking power structures that hurt people instead of rebuilding them they’d see better results.

    But who knows, maybe I’m off base and like this author states austerity and liberal ideological purity is the real answer and not the entire reason the right wingers are ascendent:

    He maintained the populists’ programme of direct financial support for families with children. He continued with the construction of a mega transport hub, a flagship project for the previous government that he had previously attacked as wasteful.

    Letting the national populists set the political tone for him is driving Tusk’s failure.
