Germany has leverage through it‘s size and influence in the EU, especially in scenarios with QMV (Qualified Majority Voting). So even without unanimity rule, it still has a lot of power to create consent.

Without the unanimity rule, they‘d become virtually impossible to outvote, as they only need a few allied countries, while still being able to build a blocking minority (this is what happened in the article posted by Sem, not a veto, but a block by minority vote). It would also have the power to discipline smaller countries, forcing them to tow the line, aka marginalizing them.

So contrary to your take, Germany is trying to maximize its power in the EU, which is in line with the aspirations of Merz wanting Germany to become a regional power again. The Hungary example has its basis, but I find it to be rather convenient for Germany‘s strategy.

Practically in terms of current conflicts this means for Germany: Become untouchable and a Blocker in regards to measures against Israel, while also easily force action on Ukraine.

Over the weekend, Sibylle Berg and I had to inform Parliament President Metsola in writing that pushing through the chat control via fast-track procedure unfortunately violates the European Parliament’s Rules of Procedure. While Metsola then (falsely) told the interested press that everything was perfectly in order, we are still waiting for her response.

So today, at the opening session in Strasbourg, I wanted to explain it to her once again. And I was astonished to discover that the President does know the rules after all: exactly after 60 seconds, she cut off my microphone. (in accordance with the rules, but rarely done)

I still would have had quite a bit to say: ‘Madam President, under Article 22, you are the guardian of these rules (waving the printed Rules of Procedure) – declare the urgent motion inadmissible. We are not in Malta, after all! I would be happy to hand you the current version of the Rules of Procedure in person. In the MEP bar.’

What happens next? Tomorrow there will be a vote on the fast-track procedure, even though this vote shouldn’t even be taking place. If the motion succeeds, the chat control will go to a plenary vote on Thursday at noon. To stop it, 361 MEPs – a qualified majority – would have to vote AGAINST it. The bad news: Thursday is the last day before the summer break, and many MEPs are likely already on their way to their holidays. One would have to be a real rogue to suspect anything sinister about this timing… Smiley!

The US National Security Strategy (2022) says its top priority is “out-competing China and Constraining Russia” and that a key goal is that “Russia’s conventional military will have been weakened” (p.23, p.26).

A 2024 Foreign Policy analysis from a RAND expert explicitly calls Ukraine “a widening proxy war” with East Asian powers competing on the global stage.

By now, the US National Security Strategry (2026) shifts to “prioritize deterring China” and says NATO allies should take “primary responsibility for Europe’s conventional defense” (p.10, p.11).

The US wants to weaken Russia so Europe can handle it by their own, freeing the US to focus on China. Wild stuff!

Nobody’s praising anyone, you’re jumping to conclusions. If you’d have a good understanding on why you hate the US, you’d focus more on their proxy war in Ukraine to weaken and take out Russia in order to encircle China. It’s not that complicated.
