Mint’s software manager is from a repo. The manager does have flatpaks, though, so I don´t know what goes into it deciding what to give me. Probably should be updated, though, lots of reviews from 2024 on complaining it won´t sync with ankiweb due to some time accounting updates, which was my problem.

Out of curiousity: siince installing missing packages is a standard part of every linux installation, why is it up to the user to install these particular packages? Why aren’t they included in the install?

Small production run + half-decent internals probably accounts for a lot of the price.

Having experimented with $100 underpowered flip phone on KaiOS, lack of apps was a real problem. What (some) people want is the slight inconvenience of a T9 keyboard and an annoyingly small screen to help them limit their screen time, but they still want full functionality of all their apps.

Cow tools would have amazing collector’s value, though, and you could put the cows to work for the price of hay.

I remember newspaper machines used to have have boxes with the day’s paper. You’d put a few coins in, open the box, and take one paper from the stack. I imagine that was also an available resource for merchandise for re-sale.

I hear people in Argentina are hard-selling socks in the street, too, so the tradition is still alive.
